Packaging - Skills Analysis

Skill
Creating accurate packaging nets

Why did I decide to develop this skill?
As I am hoping to become a free lance graphic designer I want to have a better understanding and experience of the various disciplines that are involved in design. One of these areas is packaging which for me has been an area that I have never had any experience with. In terms of this module I would have to learn to able to create an accurate packaging net something which will not only benefit this packaging

How has developing this skill contributed your personal practise?
Developing an accurate mock packaging net of how I want my finished design to look enabled me a visual of how the potential finished design would look like. The ability to create an accurate net allows me to test and experiment with my design which with out doing so would guarantee an inaccurate, flawed final design. Developing this skill has also improved my ability to solve and accurately estimate the dimensions etc.

How has developing this skill contributed to my professional development and employability?
As I am hoping to become a free lance graphic designer I want to have a better understanding and experience of the various disciplines that are involved in design. One of these areas is packaging which for me has been an area that I have never had any experience with. Being able to demonstrate this skill also shows my ability to solve and work with dimensions and other similar mathematical situations.

How can you further develop this skill?
Working on my ability to create packaging nets is the most efficient way of developing upon this skill set. Another way is is to inspect and examine existing packaging nets and have ago at constructing or deconstructing them. This will give me a first hand experience of how they work

Skill
Being able to operate a laser cutter

Why did I decide to develop this skill?
As a graphic designer many tools are made available to assist in making the ideas on page a real concept. One of these tools which I have had very little experience with was the laser cutter and in order to complete my packaging design I required the use of one. It was not possible to achieve some of the effects that I wanted to create and I also knew that developing this knowledge would assist in future tasks and also be an advantage at industry level.

How has developing this skill contributed your personal practise?
Developing proper use of the laser cutter has allowed me to achieve more complex and precise designs, than if I were to have cut them out by hand. Doing so would have taken longer to accomplish and guaranteed a higher risk of a mistake being made. In the long run the laser cutter was much more efficient allowing me more to better manage my time.

How has developing this skill contributed to my professional development and employability?
Similar to being able to use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign etc, use of the laser cutter shows an understanding of how to use Industry level equipment. It is also a demonstration of the avenues that I take in order to achieve the design that I aiming for.

How can you further develop this skill?

With the laser cutter there are many design opportunities made available due to its precision and the ability to cut complex designs from a range of materials, therefore I only scratched the surface. To develop this skills further I could experiment more in future tasks to explore the full range of effects that are achievable.

Skill
Evaluate and analyse what makes effective packaging

Why did I decide to develop this skill?
In order for myself to effectively create a successful final outcome I must first be able to analyse and evaluate a range of packaging styles to predict the current trends at the minute.

How has developing this skill contributed your personal practise?
Developing this skill has enabled me to expand my own personal set of skills and qualities that can help me effectively analyse packaging to give an answer to the question that is what makes successful packaging. Having this ability allowed me to learn the dos and dont's of packaging design which for my own brief helped me identify the current trends and apply this style to my own final designs.

How has developing this skill contributed to my professional development and employability?
Before creating satisfying pieces of work I think that it is important to be be able to recognise them. This will allow me to effectively analyse a range of various works not just packaging. It will also give me the skills necessary to demonstrate to future employees that I can effectively give my own opinion backed up with a reason and a valid argument for why I like a specific piece of work or not.

How can you further develop this skill?
This skill is something that will develop with each module and allow my analytic skills to grow steadily as a graphic designer.

Skill

Creating 3D visuals

Why did I decide to develop this skill?
Before taking my final designs into production and development It would be beneficial for me to have a 3D visual of how the finished packaging model will look. Doing so allows me to test any imagery and text that can not be visualised using a 2D version.

How has developing this skill contributed your personal practise?
Being able to create digital 3D visuals helps me to further to add to my digital skills ability. It also improves on my ability to present developed ideas to my peers and give them an actual visual of what I am trying to achieve.

How has developing this skill contributed to my professional development and employability?
In terms of packaging and developing an actual design for a paying client, I would imagine that before investing a lot of money into actually making it they would like to see a 3D visual of what the product would look like.

How can you further develop this skill?
With graphic design becoming more of a digital art the knowledge of being able to create a pleasing mock up 3D visual is a skill which I will definitely employ in future projects.
